As a result of World War II, America had become a super power with only the Soviet Union as a rival. Following the deployment of two nuclear weapons on Japan there was little doubt which country was the dominant force.
Leaders took advantage of America’s immense power by using it to influence politics and business around the world. Like The Wizard of Oz, power was exercised behind the scenes to control outcomes favorable to the U.S.. Overt means were also utilized to accomplish economic and political goals, coups, assassinations or invasion by U.S. Military forces.
America was hell bent on becoming the empire to control the World, imperial dominance politely re-labeled as ‘American hegemony’ was the ultimate goal.
This aspiration came into conflict when John F. Kennedy became President. The path towards uncontested dominance was disrupted in October 1962 during The Cuban Missile Crisis. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and President John Kennedy realized the World was on the brink of nuclear war and potential mutual annihilation. The two nations had militarily backed themselves into corners. Both men had fought in WWII and knew the horrific reality of War, the possibility of a WWIII frightened them into affective action. During the final moments leading to a seemingly eminent conflict, these two leaders working together, outside of governmental agencies and in defiance of advice from their militaries worked out a solution. It ended the potential conflict and set forth a path which could have eventually lead to ending the cold war and creation of a world coexisting in peace.
In the aftermath of the crisis, Nikita Khrushchev and John Kennedy jointly determined that further testing of nuclear weapons was unwarranted and proposed The Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which all but eliminated further development of nuclear weapons. Against the expressed advise from their respective Military Leaders, both men were able to garner the support to put this treaty into effect by October 1963.
The unilateral decisions by President Kennedy alarmed the Powers in the U.S.. Not only was JFK functioning outside of the established channels of government, he demonstrated his America would no longer pursue the goals of establishing an American Empire. This new ideology of Peace through cooperation was unthinkable to those who had been working towards American supremacy.
With the 1964 election on the horizon, it was anticipated the general popularity of JFK would gain him reelection and another four years to carry out his policies. By mutual consensus from Military, Governmental and Industrial Leaders; President Kennedy was recognized as a threat needing to be forcibly removed. ‘They’ collectively accomplished this using the expertise of elements under the direction of the CIA in Dallas on November 22, 1963.
